Best Ignatian Songs: Mercy Now

I recently discovered the haunting ballad “Mercy Now” by the roots singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier. It’s a lovely, heartfelt prayer:

Yeah, we all could use a little mercy now

I know we don’t deserve it

But we need it anyhow

We hang in the balance

Dangle ‘tween hell and hallowed ground

Every single one of us could use some mercy now

Every single one of us could use some mercy now

Lyrics here. (Go here to watch it on YouTube.)

  1. I peruse the music offerings on Ignatius Spirituality and have been more than pleasantly rewarded by what I have found. This piece, like Patty Griffin’s Mary, I found myself replaying many times. When a performer commits their soul to the lyrics provided, it becomes more than a song, but a mantra that allows us to weave it into our souls. Weather a guitar and fiddle, or a fully equipped symphony when the music lifts our being it is true.

  2. Beautiful and true. I am grateful for Pope Francis and so many others who embody mercy in our time. We all need it now.
