At Jesus’s command, Jairus’s dead daughter instantly came back to life, got up, and walked around. Then she ate something, which proved that she wasn’t a ghost.
At times you might be “dead,” not physically but emotionally or spiritually. You might be drained of energy due to illness, overwork, or stress, making a small task like sweeping the floor or sewing on a button seem monumental. Ennui may cloud your mind so that nothing interests you, not even your favorite television program. Depression can rob you of vitality, energy, and life. You just want to stay in bed. You can’t pray. Worst of all, sin and bad habits can invade your life and deaden your soul.
Jesus is master over death and life. Whenever you feel more dead than alive, he is always there, ready to take you by the hand and say, “Little girl, get up!” Hopefully with the help of grace and by dint of your own efforts, your normal life will be restored.
Jairus, a devoted father, was a bridge leading to the girl’s resuscitation. Jesus may rouse you to life through another person too: a family member, a therapist, a doctor, or a priest. His compassion is unfailing. He desires your well-being more than anyone, even you. Trust that he can wake you from your sleep.
Respond: Jesus, when I pass through dark days, be my strength and my comfort. I look to you to revive my spirits and keep me optimistic.
