Gary Smith, SJ, recently returned to the U.S. for a spell of R&R after a dozen years working with refugees in Africa. A few years ago, Gary published a book about this work–They Come Back Singing, an inspiring, gut-wrenching, and marvelous book that will show you how grace abounds in some very dark places. Gary is also the author of Radical Compassion, a tender account of the homeless people in Portland, Oregon.
Gary writes about his call in this essay, an excerpt from They Come Back Singing.
His books are wonderful and we have used both of them on campus. I can only hope he writes another one!
