The physicist Stephen Hawking has published a new book, The Grand Design, in which he confidently asserts that the universe created itself–no gods required, as he writes in The Wall Street Journal. Robert Spitzer, SJ, thinks this is a dubious argument. If you’re interested in the science and religion debates, read Fr. Spitzer’s takedown of Hawking. He does a good job of it on YouTube too. Great point. Surprised Hawking didn’t see this obvious problem with his conclusion.
